What are the most common types of computing devices? What are their typical forms? How do they differ from one another? A short discussion of how different operating systems are utilized in different kinds of computing situations are as follows:
A Distributed Computing Environment: In a distributed computing environment, one computer system serves as a service, while other computers are “shared” or pooled together. There is no central storage area for data. Rather, users access data via a web browser, or a command-line interface, wherever that browser is installed. In a cloud computing environment, a user’s computer systems can be located in a data center, accessed by any number of remotely hosted service applications.
A Cloud Computing Environment: In a cloud environment, different types of computing environments become cohesively integrated. The cloud consists of several separate components, each having its own purpose and characteristic. A user’s computer becomes part of a network, where it can be accessed virtually without a need for installation, download or memory access. Software applications become part of the cloud, being accessed and run in a manner independent of the underlying hardware. Different types of services (such as application hosting and software development) may also be hosted on the cloud, taking up less space and using significantly less power.
A Mobile Cloud Environment: Mobile computing is the use of a cellular computing environment for data storage and mobility. A mobile device such as a tablet computer or smart phone, or a laptop with a mobile computing card, can be programmed to retrieve information when it is needed. This type of mobile computing environment is highly convenient, as it does not require installation of software on the user’s computer system.
A Hybrid Computing Environment: Another type of mobile environment is the hybrid mobile/traditional computing environment. A hybrid environment makes use of both traditional computing devices and mobile computing devices. This type of environment combines the benefits of both technology: a traditional PC is used to retrieve important information from a computer, and the user is able to access a data file on a mobile phone while traveling. This type of environment can also be executed in a cloud environment. This way, the server and servers of the cloud are able to handle a high load, and this results in increased performance and reliability. The hybrid environment can also be a cost-effective solution to traditional computing environments.
